Fundamentals of Business Administration (BWL1) (old PO)

Module description

The module provides an overview on fundamental questions and methods of business administration as well as on the operational functional areas. Exemplarily, the investment and financing decisions in companies are deepened as overarching topics. The module serves as a parenthesis for the subsequent business administration courses by presenting the object of knowledge "enterprise" in its entirety and in its individual components. The lectures are supplemented in the context of self-study by an Internet-supported exercise program, which makes it easier for students to work on and prepare for exams at home and to make the transition from school to university by dealing with and supervising concrete questions and tasks.

The module consists altogether of the three lecture parts: Introduction to Business Administration (EBWL), Financing (FIN) and Investment (INV).

Acquired competencies

Students are able to argue with central business management terms, develop simple solution approaches, place tasks in a context and also solve them. In addition, they are able to assess investment projects with regard to their advantages and to differentiate between various forms of financing.

Examination

Module final exam (120 minutes - 9 ECTS credits).

Tutorials

Similar to the lecture, the tutorials are divided into the three thematic blocks listed below. The course serves as preparation for the BWL 1 exam. Participation in the course is not obligatory, since no further content is taught and there is no structured repetition of the material. Participation in the course is particularly recommended if students have already dealt with the material independently and would now like to test their learning progress or their level of knowledge by means of sample exercises.

Other

In order to make it as easy as possible for you to access all course materials and to communicate between you and the lecturers, both will take place exclusively on Learnweb. Please log in there and register for the course (see link above). You do not have to create a new account there, but you can log in with your ZIV account. There you will not only find all necessary information and materials, but also the discussion forum for mutual exchange or asking questions.

Investment and Finance (PO 2022)

Module Description

The module introduces financial economics. The focus is on investment and financing. The microeconomic foundations for rational investment decisions are laid. Based on this, the most important valuation methods for investment decision-making are learned and applied. Special emphasis is placed on the net present value method. The course also addresses the valuation of stocks and bonds. Furthermore, financing on equity and debt is covered and the basics for analyzing the capital structure are laid.

The module as a whole consists of the two lecture parts: Financing (FIN) and Investment (INV).

Competencies Acquired

Students will be familiar with key financial terms and concepts. They are able to evaluate investment projects with regard to their advantageousness. They are able to identify, delineate and evaluate different financing options. They know the basic approaches to valuing stocks and bonds. Students will be able to independently apply the concepts taught in qualitative and quantitative analyses. In this context, they will also be able to apply ethical considerations to fundamental issues.
