Covid-19: Summer Term 2020 and Communication with our Chair

Teaching in Summer 2020

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the upcoming summer term will start on April 20, 2020.

Our Chair will offer and teach all courses that were scheduled for the summer term. Nevertheless, we will make some adjustments, especially concerning the way courses are taught during the summer term. This will include a focus on digital learning opportunities. We are currently in close contact with the university's administration and our department and are working on any necessary adjustments with regard to our courses.

Course "Managing Growth": Updated Time Slots & Rooms

Please note that we have slightly shifted the time slots and rooms for our lecture Managing Growth: Organizational Design and Financial Management in order to reduce conflicts with other courses:

The lecture/excercise will now take place in the first term weekly on Wednesdays, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in room J 490. On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, there will not be any lecture due to the Symposium Oeconomicum. Therefore, we have scheduled another lecture on Monday, May 18, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room S 2.

Controlling 2025: Exploring the future of Controlling

For the final lecture of this year's course "Strategic Management Accounting", Dr. Christian Pfennig of Deloitte visited our Chair. In his guest lecture on "Controlling 2025", Dr. Pfennig was able to provide the students with insights into which innovative technologies are already used in practice today and he also showed which digital transformations can be expected in the future.

The team of Muenster taking it to the semi-finals at the John Molson International Case Competition

Beginning of January, our Chair and the Berens Research Team sent a team of highly motivated students to the John Molson International MBA Case Competition in Montréal, Canada. The University of Muenster was represented by Theresa Humpe, Carolin Krohn, Bastian Kerber, Florian Bunn and Robin Büchter and was supported and coached by Simon Jeurissen and Florian Droese. After a few days of getting to know the province of Quebéc, our team headed to Montréal where the competition took place.

Wrapping up our Master Seminar at the AXA Germany HQ in Cologne

Last Friday, the participants of the master seminar "Predictive Analytics" and our Chair visited the AXA Germany headquarters in Cologne to wrap up the master seminar of the current semester. Throughout their research projects, the participants already had the chance to exchange ideas with various AXA employees from the Management Accounting and the Predictive Analytics departments and were thus able to draw conclusions relevant for research and practice.

Management Accounting at BASF: Challenges and Transformation Processes

Last Thursday, the Chair of Management Accounting & Control was pleased to welcome Stefan Schnell, Head of Group Reporting and Performance Management at BASF, for his guest lecture on the current trends, obstacles and solutions in the domain of management accounting. Stefan Schnell did not only outline the current challenges within the finance department but explained in detail how BASF was, is and will be coping with the ongoing digitization of the management accounting domain.

Course "Introduction to academic writing" on Jan 28, 2020

On Jan 28, 2020 from 8:15 to 11:45 (room J498), the Chair of Management Accounting & Control offers a course on how to write an academic paper. This course is targeted at Bachelor students in preparation of their upcoming Bachelor thesis. The course covers all relevant topics ranging from literature selection, structure of the paper and necessary steps in writing a paper to citation methods. This will be taught using various examples and use cases in order to give the students a head-start into their Bachelor thesis.

Cultural Change that Sticks: Dr. Dieter Kahling of Henkel on executing and leveraging cultural change for financial performance

To conclude this year's Performance Management & Strategy Execution lecture, Dr. Dieter Kahling, Corporate VP Group Financial Controlling at Henkel, held a guest lecture on the change in corporate culture under the former CEO Kasper Rorsted and Henkel's subsequent improvement in operational and financial performance. With various examples Dr. Kahling demonstrated how a rigorous execution of the new strategy enabled Henkel to evolve from the "happy underperformer" to market leader positions and further pointed out current challenges in Henkel's strategy.

Years of experience and theory combined: Prof. Dr. Dieter Truxius shares his insights on Business Performance Measurement & Management

Last Tuesday, Prof. Dr. Dieter Truxius, former dean of the University of Mannheim Business School, visited our chair for a guest lecture. In his talk concerning "Business Performance Measurement and Management: Best Practice Today and in the Near Future" Prof. Truxius presented theoretical concepts coupled with valuable practical experience from his years working in different firms. Using numerous examples, he guided the students through important KPI systems and presented new concepts, for example, for the integration of human and natural capital into management control systems.
