Course Description

Managing organizational growth is a challenging and often overlooked task by young ventures. While starting a business often rides the wave of enthusiasm for a new idea, a maturing yet fast-growing venture requires more elaborate foresight and critical analysis of primary drivers of the business to ensure long-term survival. Formal organizational design and sophisticated financial management are critical in such environments to ensure organizational routines, alignment, and liquidity. At the same time, implementing such structures often seems to stand in stark contrast to the agility and adaptiveness of the new venture. Managing this tension for growth is the key topic of this course. Among other topics, this module discusses how management control instruments can be applicable in new ventures, how the business model influences management control decisions, and how the organizational design can support sustainable growth.

The course relies on a mix of workshops taught by guest speakers, case studies, the introduction of concepts from theoretical and empirical research, and a very interactive teaching style.
