Case Studies in Finance

Application:

  • Initially, a first online pre-application for the course “Case Studies in Finance” is necessary to allow for the organization of the course. The pre-application is open at the end of the preceding summer semester.
  • For the participation in the course, a second online application both on the FCM website and at the examination office is necessary. Please refer to the table below. The second application on the FCM website is open approximately two months prior to the course.
  • A participation in the course during the summer semester can only be guaranteed if a semester abroad can be verified by a certificate upon application. In case of available places, by order of decreasing priority, also international and national internships can suffice as a reason for participation during the summer semester.
  • In the second application on the FCM website students can state preferences for the case studies (possibly only for the course offered in the winter semester). Afterwards, we will group the students in a random drawing and inform the participants. About a month prior to the workshop, students will be provided with preparatory literature.
  • Please refer to the respective learnweb course for further information.

Description:

Within the scope of the course “Case Studies in Finance” the students are invited to apply their previously acquired knowledge from other courses into real world case studies. In cooperation with partner companies, students work on case studies covering various finance topics in an obligatory attendance course. The list of topics is revised every year. Prior to the case studies, students familiarise themselves with the topic independently and conduct literature research. We recommend students to participate in the course “Case Studies in Finance” during the final year of their Master's degree. To be precise, the Module Descriptions suggest the participation in the third Master semester.

Learning outcomes:

The students are able to analyze questions from the industry within a fixed time frame. They can structure a problem, identify the key issues and analyze them in detail. Depending on the task, the students apply quantitative and formal-analytical methods. Additionally, they are able to solve the problem as a team. They can present and explain their arguments within the team as well as to the client. Both aspects represent important key qualifications.

Performance:

Relevant work is a group seminar paper, which is usually written by 3-4 students. There is one group grade at the end, which counts 100% as examination performance.

Prerequisites:

Students are expected to have completed some of the modules FCM01 – FCM08. Further details may be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Dates:

The case studies are solved during an all-day workshop. The date will be announced well in advance.

Winter semester: January 12, 2024
