“CLAIRE“ calls for common action in artificial intelligence research

“Excellence across all of AI. For all of Europe. With a Human-Centred Focus”

There is scientific consensus that artificial intelligence (AI) methods and technologies are posed to bring transformative change to societies and global industries. AI might play the role as a major driver of innovation and future growth. As a result, AI is at the top of international policy agendas around the globe.

In China as well as in the United States of America, huge investments in the future-oriented technology are made by the private sector, whereas investments failed to materialize in Europe. As a result, European countries are increasingly losing talent to academia and industry in other parts of the world. Consequently, 600 researchers have now formed an initiative to establish a high-quality AI research network at the European level to increase Europe’s strength and position in the area of AI research. Together with Dr Morten Irgens (Vice-rector of Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway), and Prof. Philipp Slusallek (Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Germany), Prof. Dr. Holger Hoos (Professor of Machine Learning, LIACS, Leiden University, The Netherlands) has initiated “CLAIRE” (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe).

Prof. Heike Trautmann is professor of Information Systems and Statistics and Vice Dean for Internationalization of the School of Business and Economics (SBE). She is one of the key supporters of the initiative, which is aimed at uniting the AI community in Europe. CLAIRE will comprise a network of centres of excellence, strategically located throughout Europe, and a new, central facility that serves as a hub, providing state-of-the-art research conditions, and fostering the exchange of ideas and expertise. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will serve as a role model for this goal.

If you would like to find out more about CLAIRE or if you want to sign the vision document electronically, you will find further information at claire-ai.org.
