Doctoral Course: Introduction to Secondary Data Applications in Management Research with Stata

Format

The course “Introduction to Secondary Data Applications in Management Research with Stata” will take place in the winter term 2024/25.

The course consists of two parts:

Day 1 and Day 2 on 09 and 10 September 2024 will take place virtually via Zoom.

Day 3 and Day 4 on 26 and 27 September 2024 take place in person.

The course will run all day each day.

Participants receive a certificate according to § 9 of the Studienordnung zum Promotionsstudium vom 10. Oktober 2002 / § 7 of the Promotionsordnung der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der WWU vom 23.07.2018 for participation in this course: Wissenschaftstheorie und Methoden (“A-Schein“/“Forschungsmethoden“)

Content

The course focuses on the analysis of panel and secondary data in empirical management research. Students will learn to perform panel (data) analysis using the statistical software Stata 18. Fixed effects models, moderator analysis, and standard error clustering are also covered. Using a secondary data set, students will prepare data according to the guidelines of current management publications and present their results graphically and in tabular form. In addition, the course will demonstrate how to prepare and document Stata commands and data according to the guidelines of reputable economics journals.

The focus of this course is on applying the above aspects in the context of empirical management research. The primary audience is doctoral students in strategic management, organization, or entrepreneurship, as well as masters students in the minor research.

Professional skills

Participants will learn how to

  • Analyze panel data from archival sources (e.g., Compustat, Execucomp, Thomson Reuters Eikon)
  • Perform regression analysis in the context of management research
  • Build fixed-effects models and standard error clustering models
  • Interpret descriptive and univariate analyses and derive implications for management research
  • Present results graphically similar to current management research publications
  • Identify endogeneity issues and discuss potential mitigation measures (e.g., omitted variable bias, reverse causality)
  • Prepare Stata commands and research data according to the guidelines of reputable economics journals

Examination

  • Text file of Stata commands (do-File) for case study (including all steps for a fully functional code)
  • Preparation of a PowerPoint presentation document
  • Presentation of the PowerPoint document in class, followed by an extensive Q&A session and discussion of the topic
