History of the department and institute

1902: Successful expansion of the Academy to include a Faculty of Law and Political Science by Kaiser Wilhelm II on the initiative of Prince Otto zu Salm-Horstmar.

1922: Introduction of an independent economics degree programme by the Prussian Ministry of Culture. Expansion of the Department of Political Science into the Department of Economics and Social Sciences.

1929: Foundation of the Research Centre for Settlement and Housing, as well as the Department of Transport Studies by Prof. Dr Werner Friedrich Bruck

1931: Prof. Dr Werner Friedrich Bruck, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science and Professor of Economics, founds the first ‘Seminar for Auditors’ at the Institute of Economics and Social Sciences.

1946: Prof. Dr Rudolf Johns is appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science on 25 July 1946.

1947: Prof Dr Rudolf Johns follows a call to Tübingen. He is succeeded by Prof Dr Albert Schnettler, who continues the seminar for auditors and establishes the ‘Institute for Business Administration’.

1954: The ‘Institute of Business Administration’ is renamed the ‘Institute of Corporate Finance and Taxation’ (22 November 1954).

1955: Establishment of a separate degree programme in Business Administration with the academic qualification of Diplom-Kaufmann. Initially there were three chairs of business administration, from 1960 there were four.

1957: The ‘Institute for Corporate Finance and Taxation’ becomes the ‘Institute for Business Analyses’ under the direction of Prof. Dr Albert Schnettler.

1964: Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Ulrich Leffson replaces Prof. Dr Albert Schnettler as Director of the Institute for Business Analyses. The Institute consists of the two areas of auditing and business taxation, of which Prof Dr Leffson holds the Chair of Auditing.

1965: Appointment of Prof. Dr Dr h. c. mult. Dieter Schneider. Shortly afterwards, the ‘Institute for Corporate Accounting and Taxation’ is founded. In 1967, the ‘Institute for Business Analyses’ was renamed the ‘Institute of Auditing’, which was initially headed by Prof. Dr Ulrich Leffson and then from 1979 to 2003 by Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Jörg Baetge. Jörg Baetge from 1979 to 2003. Since 2005, Prof. Dr Hans-Jürgen Kirsch has been Director of the Institute of Auditing, who renamed the Institute to IRW - ‘Institute of Accounting and Auditing’.

1969: Separation of the Faculty of Law and Political Science into a Faculty of Law and a Faculty of Economics due to the steadily growing number of students.

1971: Prof. Dr Dietrich Börner succeeds Prof. Dr Dr h. c. mult. Dieter Schneider and becomes Director of the Institute for Corporate Accounting and Taxation.

1972: WP/StB Dr Rainer Ludewig (*1926), Kassel, is appointed Honorary Professor at Münster University of Economics and Business Administration (teaching position until 2002).

1998: Retirement of Prof Dr Dietrich Börner.

2000: Appointment of Prof. Dr Eva Eberhartinger, LL. M. as the new Director of the Institute for Corporate Accounting and Taxation; at the beginning of 2002 she follows an appointment at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

2002: Prof. Dr Christoph Watrin, StB, becomes the new Director of the Münster Institute of Accounting and Taxation in October.

2003: WP/StB Prof. Dr Rainer Ludewig is awarded the Faculty Medal of Honour in recognition of his special services to teaching at the IUB.
