Deutsche Bundesbank awards prizes for theses

The head office of Deutsche Bundesbank in NRW has been cooperating with the Institute of Banking for many years. Hence, the president, Margarete Müller, did not miss the opportunity to give a video presentation in the lecture "Financial Intermediation II" by Johannes Kriebel on July 8.

The president spoke from an economic perspective on the role of Deutsche Bundesbank in dealing with the negative effects of the Covid 19 pandemic. While the initial focus was on averting a liquidity crunch, the main focus now and in the further course is on potential corporate insolvencies.

Furthermore, in a small, Corona-compliant attendance event in Düsseldorf, president Müller for the first time awarded prizes to two students for their outstanding theses. Both theses are closely related to the statutory tasks of Deutsche Bundesbank.

Philipp Sporkmann (left in the picture), supervised by Jörn Debener, was awarded a prize for his bachelor's thesis "The risk-taking of banks – an analysis of key determinants". In a literature analysis, he shows, among other things, that banks react to expansionary monetary policy measures by taking on more risk.

Christopher Kipry (right in the picture), supervised by Victoria Böhnke, received the prize for his empirically based master's thesis "Implementation costs of regulatory requirements and bank mergers". He provides evidence of a significant positive effect of the implementation costs of the Basel III framework on the merger probability of Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken. The cost efficiency of a bank, but not necessarily its size, is decisive for the extent of the additional costs. Mergers are therefore by no means always the right response.

Professor Andreas Pfingsten was visibly pleased with the successful work. He sincerely thanked the president for her presentation, the awarding of the graduates and the wonderful cooperation as a whole.
