Guestlectures on Judgement and Decision Making

by Elke Weber (Princeton) & Eric Johnson (Columbia)

We were pleased to welcome Professor Elke U. Weber (Princeton University) and Professor Eric Johnson (Columbia University) as guests at the Finance Center Münster on September 30 – October 1, 2025.

During their visit, Elke Weber gave a lecture on “Query Theory: A Process Account of Constructed Judgments and Preferences”, in which she presented new perspectives on how preferences are actively constructed during the decision process, and how the sequence of queries can shape individual judgements.

Eric Johnson, in his lecture on “Exposing Omitted Moderators: Explaining Why Effect Sizes Differ in the Social Sciences with Implications for Research Practices”, addressed the question of why empirical findings often differ across studies and highlighted the role of unobserved moderators for strengthening research practices in the social sciences.

In addition to the lectures, the visit provided many opportunities for exchange. PhD students of the FCM benefited from individual conversation slots, where they were able to present and discuss their own research projects with our guests. The first day concluded in a collegial atmosphere with a traditional Westphalian dinner.
