Abstract

This talk explores the frontier of empathetic AI, where algorithms become companions for social good. Drawing on design science research and the concept of "Artificial Consciousness," Prof. Chatterjee will discuss the opportunities and ethical challenges in shaping AI that embodies compassion. He will demonstrate Clare-AI, a digital companion developed to address the crisis of loneliness, arguing that empathetic design is essential for ensuring AI advances human flourishing and serves as a catalyst for real social impact.

Dr. Samir Chatterjee is the Fletcher Jones Chair of Technology Management and Design at Claremont Graduate University. A leading scholar in Design Science Research, he authored the field's best-selling book and founded the international DESRIST conference. With over 170 publications and 20,000 citations, his work focuses on machine learning in healthcare and persuasive technology. He is the recipient of the distinguished lifetime achievement award for his contributions to Design Science Research.
