PEDD 2018
From March 15 to March 17, 2018, the second conference on “The Political Economy of Democracy and Dictatorship” took place at the University of Münster. Jointly hosted by Thomas Apolte of the Chair of Political Economy at the University of Münster, Mario Gilli of Bocconi University Milan, Mario Ferrero of the University of Piedmont and Yuan Li of the University of Duisburg-Essen, the conference again attracted more than 70 international scholars from the field of economics and political science to attend this truly interdisciplinary event.
PEDD generally aims at promoting research and academic discourse on the origins, mechanisms and consequences of different types of political regimes. The 2018 conference provided a platform for animated discussions in 17 parallel sessions on various topics including political accountability and policy outcomes in democracies and autocracies and the link between institutional quality and prosperity among others.
Two inspiring keynote lectures, held by Uwe Sunde (LMU Munich) and Timur Kuran (Duke University), completed the academic program. Prof. Sunde gave an inspiring talk about the relationship of democracy, demography and economic development in comparative perspective. Prof. Kuran presented recent research on the highly relevant question of why intolerant communities evolve and threaten democratic stability.
Besides the academic program, many conference attendees got to know the city of Münster during the conference’s social program and continued the day’s discussion during a conference dinner on Friday evening.
We would like to thank everyone involved in the organization of the conference and we would like to thank all conference participants for their contributions the academic program. The conference received generous support from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the International Office of the University of Münster and the Münster School of Business and Economics.
