New method for defining (digital) markets

A central prerequisite for deciding antitrust cases is market definition, i.e., determining which products are in competition with each other. Conventional methods of market delineation have a number of weaknesses and are in particular not suitable to delineate markets of digital goods. In this project, a new survey method for market delineation will be developed, tested and applied to current cases in competition economics. The survey method presented here is based on insights from other economic disciplines, in particular decision theory and experimental economics. It differs from existing market definition methods in particular in that it is not based on price changes and thus also allows market definition for gratuitous digital goods.
