Seminar on Institutional Determinants of Economic Prosperity (Winter Semester 2023/2024)
In this seminar, we will discuss the notion of economic prosperity, how it is measured and what its determinants are. We will start by discussing economic prosperity and various concepts for its measurement, some well-known, some lesser known. Subsequently, we will tackle the notion of institutions and discuss their nature, and finally, we will combine those two realms to analyze which institutions are particularly conducive to economic prosperity. We will also look at different country clusters, as we will find that the effect of institutions might differ across regions.
The seminar will start with an introductory session on October 20th, from 12 PM to 1 PM, in which the topics will be allocated to the students, and we will have the seminar in a blocked format on January 11th and 12th (roughly 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM on both days). The classroom is yet to be determined. The students will write a 15-page seminar paper between the introductory session and December 22nd. Introductory literature will be provided by the lecturer. Also, the students will be asked to provide comments for one other seminar paper.
The seminar will mimic the style of an academic conference. We will have seven sessions that follow the topic outline below:
Session 1: GDP as an Indicator of Economic Prosperit
Session 2: Alternative Indicators of Economic Prosperity
Session 3: Institutions and their Measurement
Session 4: Institutions and Prosperity on a Global Scale
Session 5: Institutions and Prosperity in Resource-Rich Countries
Session 6: Institutions and Prosperity in Sub-Saharan Africa
Session 7: Institutions and Prosperity in Latin America
Each topic can be allocated twice, a maximum number of 14 students will be admitted to the seminar, slots will be allocated on a first come first serve-basis. The seminar language is English. The seminar yields 6 ECTS and can be taken as a compulsory seminar, as an elective or as part of the Erasmus program. Information will be provided through the Learnweb platform.
