Vorlesung (084206): Early Modern Globalisation, c. 1450-1850

When did globalisation begin? Early modernists firmly place the onset of globalisation in the sixteenth century, when for the first time, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas all became connected through trade. This class offers an overview of the historical developments that together constituted globalisation from c.1500 to 1840. It introduces some central themes of early modern global economic history, including slavery, trade, colonisation, sliver flows, and environmental degradation. It discusses the economic roots and consequences of each of these developments. By focusing on the ‘big picture’ it enables students to place historical developments in Europe within a global context.
