Against the background of a more risk-oriented credit provision by German banks and increasingly more restrictive financing conditions for German midsize companies this research project determines if committing in a inter company group has impact on the risk situation of a company. The German Federation of Buying and Marketing Groups mandated the IFG in 2003 to conduct an empirical study with headquarters and members of such groups. As risk indicator the Creditreform credit-rating was used. In the project the credit-ratings of 15000 companies were compared with a random sample of the same size. Additionally questionnaires were handed out to get more impressions about financing conditions of group members and the relation between group members and the headquarters. The results are promising: Group members have a lower probability to experience risks than non-cooperating enterprises.
