Local air pollution control and climate change mitigation are timely and important challenges that are tackled not only in the international arena but also on national and regional level. Both aims can be approached with a number of interacting policy options that may contradict or complement each other. Only a well-coordinated set of policy instruments can avoid inconsistencies while leveraging synergies. The overarching objective of the research project INTEGRATE is identifying such a coordinated set for China and Germany based on an integrated economic analysis.

Such an integrated analysis of the energy-economy, its greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution impacts, involves a series of challenges:

  • Assessing synergies and trade-offs between climate change mitigation and air pollution control in the context of the energy transition
  • Designing adequate policy instruments to address interrelationships between climate change mitigation and local air pollution
  • Understanding firm behavior and consumer responses to environmental policy
The project INTEGRATE is tackeling these challenges by bringing together the expertise of a Sino-German research consortium and coupling different state-of-the art empirical methods.
