Lunchtime Seminar: "Complexity-based Selection of Production Planning and Control Architectures"

Abstract: The overall architecture designating where the different tasks in production planning and control are executed is usually an emergent property based on the combination of the employed information systems. With the advent of Industry 4.0, highly efficient production systems being able to manufacture customer specific goods are envisioned. This demands more flexible and reactive production systems, which in turn requires the employment of heterarchical production planning and -control architectures to fulfill these requirements. While research discussing and determining the need for autonomy in production systems exists, no publications focus on this architectural perspective so far. From another point of view, heterarchical production planning and control architectures are only needed, when hierarchical architectures have troubles handling the underlying system complexity. Here, literature however does not depict the interactions between a growing system complexity and the computational complexity of the related planning tasks. In this talk, I argue that both of these perspectives are necessary, and that a conscious choice of a production planning and control architecture is needed to fulfill the requirements imposed by Industry 4.0. Information Systems as a discipline is in the unique role of being capable of connecting the different research streams needed to tackle these questions.

Bio: Dennis Horstkemper is a research assistant working at the research group for Information Systems & Supply Chain Management at the University of Muenster. Since 2012, Dennis has been working in multiple international research projects in the areas of Operations Research, Supply Chain Management and Humanitarian Logistics. His main research interest regards production planning architectures in the context of Industry 4.0, particularly focusing on the aspects of complexity management, decentralization, and enterprise architecture management.
